ASUS Z170 Non-K Overclocking Guide

In this quick guide I will explain the process of ASUS Z170 Non-K Overclocking. The non-K OC is really easy and can be done within few minutes. Few days ago I published a short article about overclocking non-K CPUs. Depending on the CPU you can increase the clock between 15-70 % without any problems.

Unlike K-CPUs which can be overclocked using the multiplier, non-K CPUs have to be overclocked using the BCLK. Pre-Skylake CPUs such as Haswell or Devils Canyon could only be overclocked by about 3-5% using the BCLK because the BCLK was still tied to the DMI and the PCIe.

slide-3However, for Skylake CPUs, BCLK and PCIe have a dedicated reference clock which always stays at 100 MHz – no matter how you change the BCLK. In other words: You can push the BCLK without worrying about other components.

The non-K BIOS is skipping some parts of the power-management, so there are few things you have to keep in mind:

  • The missing power-management will not allow to read out any core temperature. However, you can read-out the package temperature with the tool HWInfo (make sure to stay below 70°C package temperature)
  • HWiNFO
    0.00 KB | 25835 downloads
  • No C-States. CPUs will always run full speed and full voltage.
  • No Turbo-Mode.
  • No iGPU.
  • Intel AVX is screwed. Some benchmarks like Intel XTU use AVX and you will have about 4-5 times lower score. As far as I know no game is using AVX so it’s no problem to use this for gaming rigs. Not suitable for professional usage tho.
  • Avoid high memory clocks. Everything around 2600 MHz will be fine.

For 24/7 overclocking and gaming you don’t have to worry about any of these points. Pentium, i3 and i5 CPUs have a low power consumption which results in a low core temperature for 24/7. As long as follow my guide you don’t have to worry about the missing temperature readout.

Depending on your budget you should only consider these CPUs:

All of the CPUs should easily reach 4400-4500 MHz and a high multiplier is not needed because you can compensate everything with the BCLK.

!!!!! UPDATE: !!!!

If you have trouble to flash back to the old BIOS, use this guide:

How To: Flash back to older BIOS on ASUS Z170

ASUS Z170 Non-K Overclocking Steps

My setup:

The CPU clock is a result of the BCLK x Multi. E.g. a i3-6100 has a stock clock of 3700 MHz (100×37). For example a BCLK of 120 will result in a core clock of 4440 MHz.

You basically have to change 3 main values to overclock: CPU BCLK, CPU Multi (Ratio) and CPU Core Voltage. While you can always use around 1,325 Volt as CPU Core Voltage, the CPU Multi and BCLK depend on the exact CPU.

Using the ASUS Non-K BIOS, the CPU will always be at the maximum multiplier. This means you only have to change the BCLK, Core Voltage and keep the memory at the correct speed.

CPU NameCPU + Ring MultiBCLK for 4500 MHZ
Pentium G440033137
Core i3-610037122
Core i3-630038119
Core i5-640027167
Core i7-670034133

Make sure you have a sufficient CPU cooler. Don’t try this with the Intel Boxed cooler.

ASUS Z170 Non-K Overclocking Example

BCLK depends on the CPU. Check values in the table above. Example with Pentium G4500T to 4400 MHz.

  • Enter the BIOS
  • Go to Advanced CPU Configuration
  •  – Set Boot Performance Mode to Turbo Performance
  • Go to Advanced CPU Configuration and to the sub-menu CPU Power Management Configuration
  •  – Set Intel(R) SpeedStep(tm) to Disabled
  •  – Set CPU C states to Disabled
  • Go to Extreme Tweaker and to the sub-menu External Digi+ Power Control
  •  – Set CPU Loadline Calibration to Level 7
  • Go back to Extreme Tweaker
  •  – Set Ai Overclock Tuner to XMP
  •  – Change the BCLK Frequency to the value you need (in my case 147)
  •  – Adjust the DRAM Frequency to a value around 2600 MHz
  • Set the CPU Core Voltage Override to 1.325

Depending on the CPU quality you migh also need a little bit more CPU Core Voltage. Up to 1.40 Volt is safe to use with sufficient cooling.

If the setting is working well you can also try to use a higher memory clock.

If you have any kind of questions or problems, don’t hesitate to ask in the forums:

Will the Z170m-plus be available soon?

    • der8auer

Not sure about that yet. Hope so.

    • micheal

no bios for the z170 s .. which of these bios can i use if any ?

    • Tim

Outdated, dont work anymore. They fixed it with a new bios version(3017) and probaply with new windows updates…

      • Andre S.

you have to downgrade your bios to one of these smart guy

        • Tim

You cant downgrade the new bios version 3017 does not allow to downgrade with ez flash!!

          • JRock

I have encountered the same problem, and can no longer downgrade and get non-k bits to boot into windows (freezes during boot) I can get into windows by disabling all but one cpu core. Seems like the microcode update killed my previous i5-6400 @ 4.7 ghz OC. I can only run the cpu at 3.3 ghz using the Ai 5way optimization.

          • san

You can, by hard flashing the bios. Look it up, it’s cheap (13 euros), you get a brand new bios chip send to you. You just tell them you want this bios on it 😉

I am having trouble though, seems my ratio is stuck at 28, even though max should be 34 (according to cpuz). I also can’t go higher then blck 139 (results in 3.9ish GHz), once I hit 140 windows wont post (bsod, critical process died, though it first looks like it would boot but then the windows logo disappears and it get stuck in loading until the bsod comes). It might be my ram since I’m still using ddr3 (I dont had a lot of cash) and the 170-p D3. Still gonna try some more stuff but any tips would be useful (mobo/chip to weak? Or windows microcode?)

  • Andre

Anything for Asus z170i pro gaming (mini itx) yet?

  • JahOo

What about Asus Z-170 P? Will be soon or…..

  • steven

    easy 4.6 ghz on my i5 6600 bclk 140 ( asus z170 pro gaming ) ram 2613
can i up my bclk if i up my ram ? ( ddr4 kingston hyperx fury 2133 2x4go)

  • Andrej

is bios the same for Z170 PRO GAMING and Z170I PRO GAMING, by any chance ?

  • yong

I’m told there was new bios which already fixed the power management issue, really?

  • Dan

    Thanks for the guide!

Do you know if there’s any reasonable prospect of your friend releasing a Maximus Hero 8 Alpha non-K bios?

This will determine whether I’m getting the board!

    Thanks for your help!!!

  • Xentor

Anyone else having stability issue’s with overclocking?

Tring to boost my i5-6400 on a Z170 Gaming Pro (asus) but i’m having boot issue’s. Sometimes it boots on 4.5ghz and sometimes it wont even boot on 3.4ghz (both with around 1.35 volts)

Did the LLC etc, also tried to change memory speed but did not seem to help.

    Z170 Gaming Pro
    8GB DDR4 3000Mhz CL15
    Scythe Mugen Max

    Any advice / tips?

    • Xentor

      Found the issue i guess.

I had the multiplier set on 27 in the bios which caused instability. It seems you need to set the multiplier to the max of the cpu (for my i5-6400 to 33) to get it stable. When you do this it will run on 27 in windows etc.

      Running 4ghz stable @ 1.28v

  • Yazon2006

As I understood the biggest potential of overclocking has Core i3-6320 because his multiplier is biggest? All processors has BCLK 100 MHz, so Core i3-6320 has 39x multiplier. If we increased BCLK to 150 we should get 5850MHz. For increasing to such frequency Core i5-6400T we should increase his BCLK up to 265(!)MHz. That is much more dangerous! I’m right?

    • der8auer

Unless you use extreme cooling solutions you will hardly reach clocks above 4.7 GHz with non-K CPUs. For normal Overclocking with air/watercooling you don’t need a high multi. You can compensate it with the BCLK.

  • cola

hey i have i7 6700 non k and asus z170 pro gaming. and memory g.skill 3000mhz. and cpu cooler NH-D15
i overclock to 4300 mhz at 1.3 volt the temp cpu (not core) about 55c
when i try to overclock to 4.4 to 4.5ghz the volt around 1.42 and the cpu temp around 64c.
    stress test in realbench.
MY question IS is it safe to run at 4.5ghz
or shoud i stay at 1.3 volt with 4.3ghz.
and one question the memory speed is fine on3000mhz. and 4.3gh…

    • der8auer

Yea with NH-D15 and those voltages it’s totally fine. 4.5 GHz will work without any temperature issues. The cooler is strong enough.

If your CPU can handle the 3000 MHz at 4.3 GHz or more – sure why not.

    • James

Have you any problem with your i7 6700? I’m thinking about do a little overclock on my. I have a water cooler Seidon (basic) and a ASUS Z170-P. I want my i7 at 4.3 ghz when turbo boosted, ONLY turbo boost. I know if I try 127 in BCLK I’ll get 4.3, but I’m afraid hahaha

1.4V is not much? I want put 1.3V in the worst case

  • Mauro

I’m so sad because the Z170P-D3 isn’t in the list 🙁
I think this mobo will jump out of my pc soon.

    • Yazon2006

Hey Mauro, I understand you! Please accept my condolences. I think my Asus Z170P will go to the garbage too after few weeks if they would not make bios update for Asus z170 chipsets… I will never ever buy Asus products in future…

    • der8auer

BIOS are coming 🙂 Wait few more days. Will keep you guys updated but it’s confirmed.

      • David

Best news I’ve had this year 🙂 These gonna be official bios with everything working or is it to early to tell yet?

    • der8auer

The correct BIOS for the ASUS Z170-P D3 is now online 🙂

      • Barrington Blowtorch

I tried overclocking on this particular motherboard (i5 6400), and the CPU is very unstable, even at 110 BCLK. Also, for some reason, the temperature readouts still work. Is it possible, this motherboard/bios is unsuitable for BCLK overclock?

Thank you for your effort either way.

  • Kaudii

great that it is possible to overclock processors Skylake without K on motherboards with Intel Z170, but I have a motherboard from Asus which does not have the version of the BIOS is there any chance that things do not work if I need to change the motherboard to tweak my i5 6600. The motherboard is the Asus Z170-K.

  • parsa

when i updet biose to ASUS Z170-A Non-K OC ,my windos dont boot up. why!? my cpu is 6400 and m.b is asus z170 a… when update to oficial bios its be correct but with non-k oc bios, It was stuck at Windows startup !?

    • der8auer

Mh never had that issue. Did you load setup defaults and also tried to flash a different BIOS and back to non-K BIOS?

      • parsa

first i update my bios to non-K BIOS and continue your Instructions for non-k oc.
But then I saw this problem(windows dont boot and stuck at Windows startup).
after that i tried to flash and update non-k bios to official bios . again i tried to update to non-k bios .
        But also saw the problem.
Is there a way to know where is the problem?

      • parsa

today i update bios to non-k version… and dont Change bios settings….But without the change bios setting , Windows can not boot and stuck at Windows startup !
Please … where is the problem!?

        • Nick

Hey parsa i had the same Problem with my z170-A from Asus and my i5 6400

Try donwgrading the bios from the current to to the oldest flashable bios an then flash the non k overclockable bios

And if you just wanna test if its working with the bios you have to go for this settings at least

          Enter the BIOS
          Go to Advanced CPU Configuration
          – Set Boot Performance Mode to Turbo Performance
Go to Advanced CPU Configuration and to the sub-menu CPU Power Management Configuration
          – Set Intel(R) SpeedStep(tm) to Disabled
          – Set CPU C states to Disabled

          Then it should start

          I got my i5 6400 @ 4.4 Ghz with 1.4 V
          Hope i could help

          • joho

            Hey Nick
Im having the same problem with the windows boot freezing..

Do you still know which bios you took for the “oldest flashable bios”?

  • Jon

Hi! Is it confirmed that it´ll be a non-OC BIOS for itx Asus Z170i Pro gaming?

Asus cashback promo ends tomorrow… so I would buy soon if it´s confirmed.

  • Viscount

I see some new BIOS dropped for the left out Asus models. Any chance of getting official Asus BIOS updates for all the other boards. I’m currently running a Pro Gaming model and I can’t get any stability from the unofficial BIOS.

  • federico

Guys i got a problem. Sud following the instruction step by step on My maximus 8 hero i5 6600 and 16 Gb hyper x 2133. With the instruction setting it failato overclock, if i lower the overclock it don’t even start Windows. Anyone With My same problem? Actually can’t use the computer

    • parsa

      for me… when i update bios to non-k ver… my windows can not boot… i think z170 a m.b non-k bios have a problem or another….
i check it with your instruction and with default setting… but window cant startup .

  • Dominik

    Hey Nice Video!

  • Ben

    Any real-world gaming benchmarks?

  • Georges

    Hi Der8auer,

I thought Asus was also suppose to release their non-k overclocking motherboard Bios officially too?
    Is this happening still?

    much appreciated

    I have the Z170-A

  • Andre

So, any news for z170i pro gaming ?

  • Whollabot

With Asus Maximus Ranger VIII BIOS (0001) the CPU temp can be accurately measured with Dual Intelligent Processors 5 software by Asus (which allows voltage, blck etc. tweaking from Windows also). Thank you for your help in the effort of non-K overclocking.

P.S. I am wondering if we could eventually have bios which would allow idling processor with low voltage to save some watts per hour?

    • Mundie

Hi man i’m about to buy this board Asus Maximus Ranger along with 6400, can I downgrade it’s bios without problems?

  • Nick vickers

    Bios update for z170 plus???

  • Yuri

Will it be possible in the future to overclock BCLK with B and H boards?

  • Mike

    BLCK 132
    VCore 1,3 V
    i5-6500 @ 4224 MHz
    Z170 Pro gaming
    2x 8 GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance 2400 CL 14 @ 2460

Works stable for me, but when i try to get higher BLCK, i get Prime95 fails (at BLCK 135-137)
    BLCK > 137 only boots with at least 1,4 V. (1,35 V and 1,375 V won’t run stable either with higher BLCKs > 134)

Could the reason be because of the missing “Set Boot Performance Mode” in Z170 Pro Gaming? In the BIOS is shows a higher CPU Frequency than actually is achieved.

  • Diego

Is Asus going to fix issues with power management with the CPU so it can save energy?

Also, the issue with temperature readings will be fixed?

  • Sandbo

May I know if there will be non-K over-clocking BIOS for
    ASUS Z170 Pro?
    ASUS Z170 Sabertooth Mark 1?

  • Jorge

Hello people, I have this pc:
    Intel i5 6600
    Asrock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4
    Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 16GB (Kit 2) 2400MHz CL15
    Tacens Mars Gaming MCPU1
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 WindForce OC 4GB GDDR5

The bios for Motherboard is 2.40:
    (1.Update Nick’s XMP table.
    2.Update Microcode.
    3.Capable of enhancing CPU performance)

I overcloked my cpu to 4026Mhz (bus speed122*33 multiplier), everything ok but the temperature is very very hot, I use the bench of CPU-Z for 5 mins and the cpu it reached 85 ° C (72 average). It’s too much hot? All components are new (two weeks) what can i do? Do you recomend me another CPU cooler? If so, which one? (20 or 30 € is my budget :D)

P.D Obviously I follow your guide perfectly

    • Sandbo

As far as I am aware, overclocking non-K CPU should render the temperature sensor non-functional, is it the universal case or just for some particular boards?

If that’s the case the temperature reading may be not reliable.
What was the voltage you are applying?

      • Jorge

Hi, the voltage That I use is 1,325, DRAM Frequency around 2600 MHz, the case is Zalman z11 hf1 (5 fan incluyen, beside the cpu cooler).
You’re right about temperature sensor non-functional, with Aida64 sensor I can see the temperature (forma cpu only). But, basically, with bus speed 122 (4026 MHz), the cpu is kept at 40°C

      • der8auer

It depends on the exact board and BIOS. There are some boards which apparently can still read out the temperature but I didn’t find out yet which boards exactly.
Of you have a good cooler and stay at 1.35 Volt or below you should be safe 🙂

    • der8auer

Temperature is fine. Everything below 95°C is fine with Prime95 because you won’t reach these temperatures with normal daily usage.

  • Bigos83

Guys, what about Asus 170i Pro Gaming ? Will BIOS be available soon ? Thanks

  • koffeeshop77

is Intel shutting non-K OC down ???,30915.html

Update, 1/21/16, 12:05pm PT: During CES, ASRock showed us some non-Z170 motherboards designed for overclocking, and we produced this story below. We spoke with many other companies during the show, and there were varying opinions on the matter. We followed up with this article. Behind the scenes, Intel hasn’t been pleased. In fact, one source at Intel said outright that the company did not support these efforts in the slightest. Now, word comes from ASRock that the company has decided it will not be moving forward with these boards. Here is the statement, in full:

ASRock has decided to remove SKY OC technology from these motherboards’ feature lists since it is not compliant with Intel Skylake CPU specifications.

Super Micro also got in touch with us to inform us that its non-Z170 overclocking motherboards will have C-State and Turbo Boost enabled when the BCLK is set to 100 MHz, but the system automatically disables these features to ensure stability when overclocking beyond 100 MHz.

according to asrock it sounds like they want to comply with intel but then build alternative boards and “consumer server boards” that will then OC and im trying to figure out if i need to buy a board now or say (cause i don’t like server boards, there is always a trade off somewhere) or if they are going to actually alter the fatality 7 boards physically say via rev.X or make it so a bios workaround will not be possible. if anyone else has heard anything please advise as this is the first i’ve seen of it. or am I just reading this wrong?
of course if i where intel i would just alter my chips and stop blaming the motherboard manufacturers for it. cause intel are the ones that F’ed up.

  • Sean

It works! It works! … I managed a reasonable OC of 4.35 on 3.6 stable tonight. Best thing about it is that my core temps DO show up normally through AI suite. I’m at 37 idle at the moment. I’ll play with it more tomorrow, but I’m jazzed even if It stays where it is. Thanks for the guide!

  • Looking for a Z170 ITX board to overclock non K cpu’s on.

Out of the boards on the list at present the only ones i would use is the Asus Impact and AsRock Fatatilty, both very expensive ITX boards in Aus ($415 and $360 respectively)

The Gigabyte Z170N-Wifi i dont like the look of because it only has 4 pin cpu power.

The Gigabyte Z170N-Gaming 5 ITX looks better, but seems to be no bios for this board yet to allow overclocking of non K cpus.

I think for me its between the ASUS Z170I-Pro Gaming and Gigabyte GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 , but neither of these seem to have a bios for non k overclocking.

Are these boards likely to get support soon?

  • Tom

I got an i3 6100 with a STOCK cooler. Is there any slight overclock possible you think? 😀 Currently no budget for an aftermarket cooler 🙁

    • Jacqueline

If you cannot afford a better cooler for around 40 bucks then you cannot afford to replace your CPU either if you pop it. Is that really worth the risk? The i3 is plenty fast enough at stock speed for a dual core. I wouldn’t OC with a stock cooler, hell I wouldn’t not OC with a stock cooler, they are the worste ever.

  • Ben

I’m really looking forward to an OC bios for the Asus Z170i Pro gaming motherboard. Hope it drops by soon enough. Kind of frustrated there isn’t one for my motherboard.

The asus z170m-plus shows cpu Tempo. They seem to be correct when comparing Temps in hwinfo and the bios but having I’m having to push 1.375v to be stable at 4.3 ghz which scares me a little but hwinfo says the cpu never exceeds 72 degrees under load and the cpu cooler barly seems to get warm. Which is odd as leaving the bios voltage on auto pushes just over 1.325v at the stock speed of 3.3ghz on the i5 6500 and the cpu cooler was really hot to the touch at that point. Also can’t push the blk any higher without 1.4v which until I have official asus bios with individual core readouts I’m not willing to do. The speed difference from stock speed is like night and day. So I’m more than happy with the free speed boost 🙂

  • shahar

    I have asus sabertooth z170 mark 1.
    Will BIOS be available soon??

  • Ry

BEWARE!!! Asus has released a BIOS update 0803 which includes a Microcode update for the Z170i. As far as I understand this will change your non-k CPU so it will not be an option to overclock!!

  • Jimmy

Among the drawbacks caused by the non-k oc, which issues do you think can be fixed? I see your comment about the temp reading. How about AVX?

    • Dr. O'Kitteh

I’m also looking forward for any news related to the possible re-enabling of AVX/AVX2 in the future versions of non-K OC BIOS, but with a little hope.
I understand they might’ve disabled those blocks either due to their low OC ability or due to their substantiol thermal impact on overal CPU heating, which is a proven fact. 🙁
It was really unexpected and frustrating how the lack of these vector FPU instructions would affect CPU’s productivity in applications like Adobe Photoshop or 264 video codec.
      I mean i5 6400 @ 4.7GHz is SLOWER than the same i5 6400 @standard 3.3GHz with AVX on!
      I mean like dang! o.O
If I’d only known it before, I’d have opted for standard 6600K, which can be OC’s while staying fully functional.
As for now, I’ll just hope guys will figure it all out and make us happy 🙂

  • Sean

    Hey folks,

Not that it’s a big deal, but has anyone noticed they’re having trouble coming out of sleep with the non-k bios? I could just as easily shut down instead (as the benefits of running 4.5mhz far outweigh ‘sleep’) but if it’s something I can tweak I’ll do it.

  • Has the work the BIOS releases been halted?

  • Lex

what do you mean by “professional usage” like video encoding? i’m planning a mini itx build with an OC’ed non-k skylake cpu as a stream pc

    • der8auer

Anything where the system has to be 100 % stable like calculations at a university which take 10 days 😀 Should be fine for streaming 🙂

      • Lex

thanks for the reply, last question tho, how would you monitor the temps since you cant read it out with any software, and specially in the asus z170i pro gaming’s case, you cant read out cpu temps in the bios either, at least thats what i understood from the “issues” list

        • Paddy

You can increase your voltage to the value you want to use (e.g. 1.35V) before you set your BCLK to the value you want to choose (e.g. 130Mhz). And because the temps depend on your voltage you will then have the temps you will also have with increased BCLK. So you run your CPU @stock, (for example an I5 6400 with 2700Mhz) and set your voltage to 1.35V or so. Then you run some benchmarks and you’ll then see that you can read out your temps because you didn’t increase the BCLK. Of course your temps will be higher then, because of the higher Voltage, but the temps are the same if you increase your BCLK. I hope it helps you!

  • Paddy

What Loadline Calibration to choose with an Intel I5 6400? And is it really necessary to set Boot Performance Mode to Turbo Performance?

  • Stealthbio84

Hopefully they also release a BIOS update for H170 chipset. Right now there’s really no point in buying and using the H170 main board due to the immense advantage of using the Z170 chipset. At least B150/H110 has it’s niche in the Budget/HTPC market.

  • leoaued

    hello ladies!
    I appreciate all the comments.
I, like many of you, also had problems with this BIOS announced to my motherboard MSI Z170M mortar!
Now, thanks to the manufacturer MSI, in my case, has officially released the BIOS to non- OC k CPU.
I have had many unsuccessful attempts with the version posted here, so I decided to settle and get back to the native official bios. When I installed seen which included a new [ NOC ] option in the BIOS OC. I took a basic stirred , CMOS reseted , I configured the clock , reboot and it was my i3 6100 to 4ghz to start playing ! all beautiful with the new ( A3 ) BIOS MSI direct official manufacturer site!
(Remembering that the bios is 01/22/16 or 22/01/16 )

  • Bigos83

    Hello guys.
I am trying to overclock my i5-6400 non-k on my Asus 170i Pro Gaming Mini-ITX but of some reasons after flash the bios I can’t set :

    AdvancedCPU Configuration
    – Boot Performance Mode -> Turbo Performance

I mean I haven’t this options on my BIOS 🙁
Does anybody had this same problem ?

  • Sandbo

Would like to confirm one thing:

Updating to a new BIOS that Intel has implemented ban on non-k overclocking, will PERMANENTLY block non-k overclocking on that CPU, even one goes back to a non-k OC enabled BIOS?

I wonder as I found someone saying Intel is able to write something directly to the CPU through the BIOS update or whatever, by implementing the microcode as a firmware update to the CPU.
This will be a bad news to anyone who has tried to use the latest BIOS.

I did, but at the moment I don’t have the intention to non-k overclock my i5-6600, it’s just fast enough now.
Great if I can do it in the future when I find it’s needed.

    • Dr. O'Kitteh

I updated BIOS to the most recent official version “Z170 PRO GAMING BIOS 1105
Update Microcode” (2016/01/20), then to non-K OC BIOS. Worked fine for me (with the exclusion of core temperature measurement and dead AVX, ofc).

I am more worried that currently overclocled CPU’s get partially disabled and in some applications they work slower than while running at standard frequencies and with standard BIOS.

      • Sandbo

        Thanks for the reply,

unfortunately your worry has to be true, I have seen people saying their AVX related computation suffered from performance hit if it is non-k overclocked, which I believe, as you mentioned, is due to the non-functional AVX feature.

Meanwhile, people are also reporting a big drop in L1 cache performance from non-k overclocking, as much as 8 times slower than it wasn’t OC-ed. This may also affect some tasks relying heavily on cache (I am not sure about which).

Anyway, in terms of gaming (at least for now) non-k overclocking gives only gain and by a very large margin, from which I think non-k overclocking is particularly suitable for building a gaming PC with a limited budget.
(There are a few amazing Eurogamer reviews on non-k overclocking and gaming, they shows >10% gain in performance in games like GTA V)

  • Garreth

Hello I have the asus z170 mark1 mobo and was wondering if there will be a bios coming out for my mobo or if i am able to use one of the ones that are already out. Thanks

  • Joe

Hi – I´m using a i7-6700 on ASUS Z170 mainboard with the lastest BIOS Update 2016/01/07. The CPU is running on 3400MHz. Before I use the non-k OC Firmware I will check the original TURBO Mode at 4000MHz.
Whitch configuration must I do to enable the TURBO Mode.
I change the following steps – but no effect – the cpu is only running at 3400MHz.
(Boot Performance= Turbo, CPU mutiplikator=40, Ai Tuner=manual, BCLK=100, (for all cores)
    The turbo-config preview says … cpu=4000 / dram=2666 / cache=4000
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanx Joe

    • Michael H.

What are you using to check your CPU mhz? If you aren’t already using this try HWMonitor. Without messing with anything your bios should have already been allowing your cpu to ramp up into it’s rated turbo speed. Unfortunately without overclocking there is nothing you can do to get your 6700 to run all 4 cores at 4ghz under load. That 4ghz is the max for a single core. I believe your max turbo for all four cores loaded at the same time is 3.6ghz. I could be wrong and it may be 3.5ghz. I don’t remember the stepping off hand. If im not mistaken all that turbo mode that you are referring to does is run the cpu as fast as it can while the computer is starting up. It does not lock the cpu into it’s turbo speed.

  • Sam

What are the chances we will get an overclockable bios without these issues?

    * No dynamic change of CPU frequency
    * No C-states
    * No Turbo Mode
    * CPU temperature reading is incorrect

  • Fernando from Chile

Can i use ddr4 2133 mhz o’cing them? , i mean with cas 16 or 17 (normally works with default bios until 3200 mhz ) but i do not know if in the custom bios will work with this oc to the memories too.
And finally, still work this bios for Maximus VIII Hero? Anybody knows?

  • Adam Big

Does “no iGPU” mean that if I want to use the integrated Intel Graphics GPU I can’t use the mentioned, downloadable bios? I can only use this Non-K overclockable bios (which you shared) with a non-integrated VGA graphics card?

How you can read cpu temp, it say “The missing power-management will not allow to read out any core temperature. No matter which tool you use, it will always just read 100°C.” ?

      • Michael H.

There is no tool that will give you the individual temp of each core like normal and those that try will read 100c like you said but you can get the package temp or CPUTIN which is normally good enough as long as you give yourself a couple degree wiggle room. Most motherboard apps list that as cpu temp and don’t include temps for each core. So when using those it will say CPU temp and give you a single reading. The most I have personally ever seen a single core go over that package temp or CPUTIN temp listed in HWMonitor is 1c and normally drops bellow very quickly.

  • Jacob

Dumb question but are these verisons of the bios work on all main windows verison i.e ( windows 7 8.1 and 10) or just 10? since I plan on doing a build with 7 board i will be using is asus z170m-plus

  • Miro

Just wondering if Asus AiSuite 3 is showing correct temperatures? They seem about right in my eyes.

    • LeaFy

I guess yes, i overclocked my i7 6700 on asus z170 pro gaming and in stress it’s 60-70 celcius degress. In normal usage 30-40, I have be quiet dark rock 3 cooler.

  • Zhilijan

Is overclocking this way doable only with this bios, or u can do it now with some new bios from asus site?

  • demck85

i got i7-6700 up to 4.5Ghz stable with 1.375v with the recommend BCLK and Ratio in the chart above. was unstable with 1.325 and 1.35 volts.

  • Michael H.

I have an i5 6400 and would like to know if anyone has experienced a dead zone with BCLK overclocking? I can get mine perfectly stable up to 4.32ghz with a 1.2v Vcore using 160 BCLK but the second i hit 161 up until 173BCLK i can’t get it to even attempt to work no matter the voltage or ram settings. I have not gone over 1.35Vcore just to be safe but considering when I hit 174BCLK it works again and I get a stable 4.698ghz with 1.35v Vcore. I know I have read an article about this deadzone a while back but haven’t been able to find it again. A sweet spot for me temp wise would be 4.5-4.6ghz since sustained 100% load sets me at 72c. Strangely I get conflicting info about skylake safe temps with what I have read on intel docs not to exceed where I am at while many in forums say I’m safe well into the 80c range.

    • Michael H.

I should also note that I am using an asrock z170 pro4 notherboard and have tried adjust the fclk to keep it as close to or under 1ghz after overclocking.

  • Imma Seal

Hello, I’m new to OC’ing so I would just like to ask, by “DRAM Frequency set around 2600Mhz” do you need RAM (that is for the RAM right?) that has atleast a speed of 2600Mhz or anything below it like 2400 will still work?

  • MarkS

Will the non-k OC BIOS for the Asus sabertooth z170 mark 1 come out?

Will there be a non-k OC BIOS for the Asus sabertooth z170 mark 1 also?

  • Casper

will the none temp read-out be solved or it cannot be done at all???

Is it possible to OC with my Z170-P without your BIOS ? Because with the Asus Bios i don t have one of the element :

    Go to Advanced CPU Configuration
    – Set Boot Performance Mode to Turbo Performance

I don t have this part, it’s enough important or i can OC without this step ?

  • John Robey

Hi and thanks for all your great work on this site. The December non k bios for ASUS 170-e causes issues with the M.2 drive and trashes my windows install. Do you know if a non k overclocking BIOS be released for the board based on the latest 1702 official BIOS?

Hi, Will be a BIOS for asus z170 Formula VIII =? tks for your time and suport.

  • Flyjum

Why are you telling everyone on your guides to set Line Load calibration to the max setting? This raises the Vcore a considerable amount and is effectively a Vboost I would highly recommend people to use the medium settings for LLC. If people are running 1.4v on the cpu the LLC can boost that up to 1.475v which is way too high unless people really know what they are doing and have great cooling. With out a CPU temp readout its impossible to know how hot its actually running. if you are running a non K OC. With 1.285v setting I saw readings as high as 1.348v with the line load on level 7.

  • Chad

Hey, I’m having some issues with my integrated graphics after flashing the non-k OC BIOS. I’v got my monitor hooked up to the onboard DVI port and when windows loads I get a black screen. Getting into safe mode, there appears to be an issue with the Intel HD Graphics 530 driver. I’ve rollback and even installed the lasted drivers from Intel. If anyone is having success using onboard graphics could you please tell me the Intel graphics 530 driver version you’re using? Open to any suggestions as well!

  • Wtchr4

    I can’t find z170 sabertooth mark 1 non k bios.

  • Filip

I have ASUS Z-170P and i5 6600 nonK . I am thinking about trying this. I have sufficient cooling etc. But I am bit afraid of updating BIOS, I have never done that before and I am scared that it can somehow make more trouble than service. So I wanted to ask what is correct method of doing it.

Second question, I heard about disabling of possibility of overclocking of nonK CPUs, I suppose this is custom Bios so its not affected, but can somehow windows updates disable it ?

    Thank you for any answer.

  • Stefan

OK guys, wtf is going on with my asus z170-p board, everything is fine until i hit 123 bclk (4550mhz on my i3 6100), if i go to 124 bclk it returns me to 4400mhz i go to 125 im at 4460 mhz i go to 126 im at 4500mhz i go to 127 im at 4450 mhz again, and it goes on an on returning to ~4400 mhz on every 3rd number, im freaking out, cant go past 4550 mhz mark because of this 🙁 , my temps are ~62c at full load.

  • Matt O

    Hey everyone,

So let me start by saying I have successfully OC’d my i5 6500 to 4.48ghz @ 1.325 v on my old Gigabyte Z170 HD3 board. I now picked up an Asus Maximus Hero VIII and for the life of me, cant get my system to boot into windows after I flash the BIOS. It will either freeze at the initial Windows loading screen after it passes POST or it will give the windows 7 \boot\BCD error. I’ve used versions 0001, 0002, 1001, and 1701 (current and only one that will get me to windows). Ive also played with all the boot options and done a complete reimage of the system. No matter what I do my motherboard q-code will always get A0 and then hang, which is supposed to mean that everything passed in the POST and it is now handing over the boot to the OS, but it obviously doesnt. I am running Windows 10 on this machine and was running Windows 7 when I successfully OC’d the Gigabyte set up. I dont really want to try to use Windows 7 just for the OC because I will be getting 1070 OC Strix soon and I would much rather have Dx12 support. But if anyone knows why I am having this boot issue, I would appreciate any and all help.

    System Specs:
    CPU: i5 6500 (stock speed)
    Mobo: Asus Maximus Hero VIII
    RAM: 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666mHz
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SSC ACX 2.0
SSD: Samsung 950 Pro 256GB (Boot drive)
    HDD: Seagate 1TB SSHD
Cooler: Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
PSU: Cooler Master Elite V2 550w
    OS: Windows 10

Side Note: Asus Dual Intelligent Processors 5 will OC my CPU to a BCLK of 102.5mHz or 3.690gHz and it runs just fine. Although there is little to no performance gain…as expected. But this clearly shows that the BCLK can be adjusted without issue.

    • Ratel

Hi. I have the same problem on my Ranger VIII. But I can run Windows normal on bios 1402.

Have also the z170-p. Bios Version 1804. I tried everything, but no chance to flash this bios 8001 here.
I tried every downgrade option I could find, nothing works:

Used rufus to create a DOS USB Stick

Afudos 4.xx => “Bios is write protected” ??
Afudos ES 2.xx => no reaction
    Bupdater 1.31 => “Bios is older…”
reflash => “fpt.exe cant be run on this platform”
    EZ Flash 3 => “Not a proper Bios…”

Anyone an Idea?? Why does the afudos method not work, why is the bios write protected?

    • Marek Sedlar

St3fan > what happens if you try downgrade bios to previous official bios, then if it works, downgrade to previous bios version until flashing modded bios will work?

  • James

I have a i7 6700 non k. If I OC my cpu at 4.3 ghz it will run only at 4.3 ghz? Without economy? I want 4.3 only turbo boost, no more that this

    • Marek Sedlar

James .: since you need to disable CPU power saving functions, it will run only at one frequency all the time.
Use HWINFO program to check CPU temps (CPU Package)

  • James

If I oc my i7 6700 non K, I will not be able to check my temps? oh, this is very bad to me :s I should bought a K version hahaha

  • St3fan

    Hello Mark,

the problem was that no bios was accepted, even the previous or newest.

I am now a step forward, but: A newer version of afudos was able to flash the 8001.rom.

Resignated I typed “afudos /i8001.rom” and it started 🙂

I had to reboot because there was no other bios on the stick.
I set to everything to “default” and now nothing works anymore 🙁

Fan starts, CPU and NB gets hot but no picture. Asus crash free 3 also does not work. (Stick with Z170P.CAP)

My suggestion: RAM is 2133 Mhz and cant boot with 2400 or 2600 Mhz. Is the default value for RAM in 8001.cap larger than 2133 Mhz? If yes I only have to buy new RAM. Or is my Board now dead?

    • Marek Sedlar

It should set default frequency for RAM, at least that it did for me, i have also 2133Mhz.
So in this case it looks like RMA time, i hope you get older bios which can be downgraded successfully to 8001 version.

  • bhappy

Thanks for your great work der8auer! I have an asus 170m plus, just wondering if there are any updated bios’s for this board, that support non k overclocking? Thanks again!

  • Miro

RIP. If you have Bios version 18xx U can’t downgrade. Unless Non-OC bios gets updated or Asus brings downgrading back, it’s no use to try. Also it’s odd that they would disable downgrading, since the bios on the CD is older and now it’s useless in case of emergency.

  • Sid

    Good Morning,

I read somewhere that that should Z170 Pro Gaming Bios also work for the new version of Pro Gaming / Aura,
Now I’ve tried it and nothing was it.
It seems to have been already standard delivered open XMP and the Multi can be as desired but change BlackScreen from 102.75 Mhz after reboot.
I wanted the bios from here flash (Z170 Pro gaming), but the EZ Flash 3 reads the BIOS is not an error: “koruppt Bios Version”
    Can you patch the bios?
    Thanks, octogen

i’m about to buy a new ASUS Z170 MAXIMUS VII Ranger and an i5 6400
is the BCLK work fine on it
can i downgrade the bios without problems ?
    help me please 🙂

  • Lucas

Hey! I’m having some issues with my i5 6400+z170 pro gaming, I hope you can help me. No matter what configuration I try, I can’t get it to over 3.88ghz with 1.325v or 1.350v and the max BCLK I can use is 144, If I use 145 or more it just won’t pass the POST. I tried changing BCLK, vcore, lowering RAM frequency, etc D:
    My current config is:
    BCLK 144 => i5 6400 @3.88mhz
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 8gb 2400 @2496
And Prime95 did a 20 hours test without any problems. Let me know if I can provide anything else. I hope you can answer me

  • Alessandro

z170 sabertooth You have some bios That Works?

  • Jacob

I am actually trying to do this as i would love to overclock my 6400, however when i try to flsh the Bios is tells me that “the file is not a proper BIOS”

    any suggestions?

I ahve an Asus z170-a motherboard and it seems to have the absolute latest Bios update on it.

  • Chimppen

Any news on asus updated bios (z170A)? Are the bios for this board working because i read some comments where many people had problems with it? Are Asus bios going to be updatet generally or is this more or less a dead thread? Hope not because this absolutely rocks, i managed to get my i5 6500 oc:ed to 4,5ghz no problems at all but i messed up my msi z170a krait gaming 3x when i tried to push it to far so now i have the asus z170a and i’m very interested of doing this with my new motherboard aswell. So updates PLEASE! 🙂

    • Sean

Just curious how you messed up your Krait? Did you set the voltage too high and burn it out? I’m at 4.5 with 1.35 Vcore and stable as can be, but am thinking about pushing it up myself, so I’m curious what you did.

  • Raven

Latest Asus bios that support new CPUs kabylake will not let you downgrade the bios to an older one or the modded ones on here, so don’t update. unfortunately I did and now I’m having to buy a replacement bios chip with an older bios flashed.

  • Frank

There seems to be a misunderstanding from the Roof.
I read about the new Intel Z170 Chipset, that one can overclock the BLCK because its not chained to PCI-E and other thing, and so, buying a “K” CPU is not necessary. That what I read, what I remember before I decided to buy it.
Back like in the Days, when it was called Front Side Bus. With my last Generation, Sandy Bridge, OC the BLCK was impossible.

So here you can see, I must have understood something wrong. If it is necessary to bring out a modded BIOS, it can´t be true that you can just “easily higher the BLCK”. But, even with this OC Bios, it does not really work. With normal Bios I can OC to 102,5 Mhz BLCK and with the der8auer BIOS I can go to 106.5. So, this is just 4260Mhz on my i7-6700, a plus of 260Mhz. That´s it. I tried a lot of Setups in the last 3 Month, but nothing works with my ASUS Z170-A (which is a very shitty Board anyway, like the ASUS I had before. Ethernet Adapter just turns off randomly once a week and I have to reboot , Reset Button never worked (I tried everything), turning on the PC only works on second try every Time, as soon I OC just a little bit of the RAM). I will never buy a ASUS Board again. Also their Auto OC… You can choose to have a Boxed Cooler, a big Fan Cooler or a Watercooler, it makes no Difference, it always results in 102,5Mhz BLCK (I tried the first 2 Configs).
The Time seems Past you can use ASUS for serious Overclocking. I am so pissed of from this Mainboard, it was all lies about OC, instead you got a dozen of Bugs.

  • argada

    not work
when i updet biose to ASUS Z170-A Non-K OC ,my windos dont boot up. why!? my cpu is 6400 and m.b is asus z170 a… when update to oficial bios its be correct but with non-k oc bios, It was stuck at Windows startup !

  • Nik D

Overclocked my i5 6400 to 4,5 GHZ succesfully but a problem occured with my RAM modules, as i’ve installed 16gb (2x8gb) DDR4 modules but Win 7×64 would only see 8 gb. Checked on Memory remap and it was ON. What could be the cause of this issue?

  • quantum

Any update for the ROG GENE VIII BIOS? When I try to follow the directions it says in secure flash ‘ Not a proper BIOS’. Is this thread done? or can an updated BIOS be made?

  • quantum

Nevermind, i think i found the proper guide for flashing an older BIOS back

  • Carillo

Overclocked my i5 6400 to 4,5 GHZ 1,35v v-core and memory stable at 3115mhz. Been stresstesing for hours and gaming for several hours, no issues 🙂 This is awsome, bought the cpu used for 80 dollar. BLCK is set to 167mhz.

Important note, i read someone else here had issues if core multiplier is set to 27. It must be set to 31. i couldn’t even boot at 4,1ghz when set to 27 even though that is the actual value of the multiplier.

I have even booted it @4,8ghz but my Corsair H60 cooler can only handle 1.35v. But that is good enough for me. CPU package temps max 64C when gaming and 70C when stresstesting for hours.

    I5 6400
    Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2800MHz 16GB @ 3115mhz

    • Greg

      3115 memory, holy shit, how?

I’m running a 6400 @ 167 BCLK as well, on an ASUS Z170-A. Have to push a bit more voltage though (1.392V after LLC currently — when it’s 1.375, it freezes after some time under load, higher voltage makes it stable.)

But the memory results I get are, well, crap. My RAM sticks have lower stock speed (2400 XMP I think), but I get almost no overclock above that. 2450MHz 15-15-15-35 works, 22something (one lower than 2450) 14-14-14-32 works, anything better and it doesn’t boot 🙁 Do I just need more voltage?

  • silgiolo

  • Philipp

    Dear Guys,

which bios can I use for overclocking an i7 6700 non-K on ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming/Aura?
Is this board identical with the vanilla ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Best regards

  • João Messias

Try to be able to do this with the H110M, which makes it quite economically viable !!

  • hello, i just bought a new mainboard that support this especial bios, the question is if i can get an pentium g4560 and oc by fsb to get 4.x ghz or to do OC i need at least an i3 6100 ?

    many thanks

  • Wildcat55

I have ASUS Prime Z270-P and i3 6100. May I make overclocking or it is possible only with modification BIOS as on Z170?

  • Max

    Hallo der8auer,

    Core: 45
    Cache: 45
    Corev: 1.330V (1.295, wenn cache 40)
    LLC: 4
    VRM Temperaturen liegen bei 72ºC nach 15min prime95 28.10 1344k.

Cpu Temp dank dem Delid Die Mate bei max. 61ºC.

    Besten Dank

Any support for the intel pentium G4600 3.6Ghz kabylake ? 😛

  • paul

Okay , I have version 1904 version of the bios on my board , if I downgrade to suitable bios for a i5 6400 for overclocking , do I still have the option to flash with the latest bios at a later date , if I sell my board etc or decide to upgrade my chip for a K version ?

  • Guan Xiong Chen

    May i ask a qusetion ?
If I have a asus b150 pro gaming motherboard and a intel 6400 cpu
Can I overclocking through the recovery bios ?

  • san

So I’m having trouble overclocking. I have the Asus Z170-P D3 and the 6700T, with the bios from here (had to buy a new bios with this bios – 8002 – preinstalled), but I can’t seem to overclock well with it. I went through all the steps (loadline to 7, disabling c-state), yet somehow windows down locks the ratio to 28 and only with 133 blck – 3.72ghz – does it seem to run. If I use 140BLCK windows won’t boot (but it does POST). Ive tried with different speeds of ram (1600mhz all the way to 2100mhz), with voltage to 1.4v but nothing works. Do you have any tips to break this? Or is this the limit of my CPU? This is an extreme budget build I got to out together for around 240 euro, but I wish I could push more out of it (it already performance good with 3.7ghz though, compared to my phenom 2@3.7ghz).

    • Vakutagin_WOT

Hello, I cannot download the BIOS, redirects to the page with hieroglyphs. Please tell me how to download! Thank!!!

  • Eugene-Stone

On the motherboard Asus z170 Pro Gaming and the i5 processor 6400, did not manage to disperse the above 3700ггц.
At a frequency of 3.7 GHz set the voltage To 1,375, while increasing the frequency of the bus no longer works, up to a voltage of 1.42 V.
Managed how to run the BIOS at a frequency of 4.05 GHz but not defined keyboard and mouse.
Tell me what can be the problem? The processor is not able to take this frequency, or the motherboard?

  • oc guru

got this to work by using the Intel flash tool in Windows 64 bit. when you reboot it will say that it failed to boot and will automatically reboot. when it does this, you then can access the BIOS.
now in the BIOS you have to set CPU profile to Manual Mode then the BCLK shows up right below. Now you have to manually type into the BCLK value, it looks like it is greyed out and you can’t type but after a while I just typed in 120 and it changed and showed the resulting core clock at the top. Then all the way at the bottom you can change the voltage. Also make sure you change the RAM speed to the correct one that you purchased because by default changing BCLK changes RAM too and if its too high your PC might not boot because of the RAM settings not CPU settings.
also make sure to follow the steps to disable the required things
and yes you need to have dedicated GPU for it to work, but it still works in 2017

My MB is Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Aura, and i’ve Download “ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming Non-K OC BIOS”…..
But when i try to Flash >>>> It says: “This is not a proper BIOS”, can anyone help me?

    i’m Using Core i7 6700 Non-K…. can i still OC it ??

  • GhostVan

I recently overclocked my i5 6400 (Non-K) with an ASUS Maximus VIII Hero Alpha and I’ve tried several variations but my ASUS Rog Strix RX 470 is stuck at -/+ 500MHz down from 1290MHz.

I have even put everything back to stock and I have the same results. My computer is also a little sluggish at times like when I move the mouse it lags for a few seconds.

    What can I check?

    I appreciate any help

  • Alex

Ich habe das BIOS erfolgreich geflashed allerdings lässt sich Windows10 nicht mehr starten und bleibt beim Booten im
    Ladescreen stecken.

I wonder with this March 2019 windows update, how many of us are going to be stuck.

Enables “Retpoline” for Windows on certain devices, which may improve performance of Spectre variant 2 mitigations (CVE-2017-5715). For more information, see our blog post, “Mitigating Spectre variant 2 with Retpoline on Windows”.
