Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut VS Kingpincooling KPx Thermal Paste LN2 Face-off (by Splave)


We all know the right thermal paste is very important for extreme overclocking. But which is best for LN2 overclocking with Intel Kaby Lake at full pot? Let’s have a look at two contenders: KINGPINcooling KPx “blue paste” or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. Let’s find out.

Thermal paste …this is how bored I am at the moment.

To start, both pastes besides color (duh) are not very similar at all. Grizzly is rather thin and will slightly flow if you were to set a ball of it on a flat surface. Blue paste is extremely thick and holds its form 100%. Now lets talk about the feel. As you spread Kryonaut, it’s akin to spreading a glaze of sorts. It is extremely smooth with some snags once in a while from a stray aluminum particle here and there. KPx paste is more like smooth peanut butter with a bit of melted candle wax aspect added in. KPx is rather difficult to spread, adding some heat to the processor or even to the thermal paste itself can help alleviate this a bit but for spread ability Kryonaut is in the lead.

Guess what? All thermal pasts will crack under extreme conditions. They all do … alllll of them. Maybe you will get lucky or maybe you are one of those guys that think they have the magic cure but that is all delusion. Since we have the out of the way now, let’s compare. Over the course of 20 mounts Kryonaut has given me 5 crack free sessions. KPx has cracked all but twice.


Let’s go deeper. Kryonaut seems to be extremely predictable on the cracking. On the first cool down to -196 80% of the time it will snap. What I have found though is that it will rarely ever snap again in the session. Pull down to full pot, let it snap, heat up to 70c, pull back down to -196 and bench. Golden. KPx seems to snap randomly and usually when idle or after coming out of a heavy load. The edge once again goes to Kryonaut.


Kryonaut is clearly better at full pot Frequency and predicting/manipulation of the snap. So let’s try to figure out why.


When we pull the mount we can see why. It seems the Blue paste is just too stiff and it almost seems to peel  away. It also gets very gritty under the stress of LN2.  The Kryonaut seems to form almost a suction to the pot because it’s so loose and doesn’t change its form at all and seemingly you would not even know its been used yet.

The tests using direct die are very telling and supremely accurate. There is only one surface being mated by the thermal paste and it is one that is impossible to create error as opposed to using an IHS where mounting can vary greatly depending on where it settles how much it slides etc. The very small die of Kaby lake does not give very much surface area at all making it a very hard task on the thermal paste.


But after comparing the two on the same exact setup Kryonaut is the clear winner in every regard.

    “heat up to 70° and pull back down again” are you doing this with xtu and the die temp or just blowtorch and the pot temp?
    Any chance of adding pics of your paste coverage before mounting the pot?

    I heat to 70c pot temp with the system off. Cool to -90c before turning back on 🙂 as far as application doesn’t seem to matter spread it blob it just use enough.

    Interesting test 🙂 Did you try kingpin paste without using a big blob? Just do normal spread on the die. Blob is not needed for kingpin and might screw up performance. The low viscosity might make it crack along the edges of the die


    I didn’t use the blob method for Kingpin cooling paste.
    I could run hours.

    I Never used the blob method, I only have tubs of the Blue so I had to spread it with the spoon. I spread both with the spoon creates a more thin even layer.

    I got some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut – Can I use it for my regular system? Or is this paste only good for short-term? Its thermal conductivity of 12.5 wm/k makes it quite tempting… 😀

      I saw a liquid nitrogen cooler in the mid nineties, so it can be done. But, the cooler had to be removed every 2 hours, possibly even less. It was really, really quite impractical.
      I suppose it proves it can be done. Technically speaking.

    I once used automotive copper grease… and it pretty much beat the expensive pastes with which I compared it (A5, MX-4, Cooler Master something-or-other, Thermalright whatever). That was using fixed fan speeds.
    I admittedly didn’t have the guts to keep using it, and went back to the thermal pastes. I HAVE heard about people that use automotive copper grease for years without any problems, but risking having to replace my system seems like a bad idea. 🙂

    I’d love to see some tests done by a magazine, though. Sort of like that old toothpaste-as-thermal-paste deal.
    So, Splave, if you’re REALLY bored, why not give it a try sometime? 😀
